The Forest are a one-man band. Originally a three-piece who formed in Manchester back in 2003, by the time they’d released their debut single ‘Living Room’ two years later they comprised just singer/songwriter Jonah Stevenson. Stevenson has since relocated to Wales, where the misanthropist’s misanthropist has set up his own micro-label: We Hate You Records.
This, the third Forest album will come across as a work in progress to some. To others it’s Stevenson paying tribute to his musical heroes. Lone Pigeon and The Television Personalities on ‘Rock and Roll Canal Boat’, Whirlwind Heat on ‘Breaking Satan’s Back’, Ariel Pink on ‘Mushroom Field With Crows’, et cetera, et cetera.
Nine tracks long. 24 minutes short. What mighty oaks from little acorns grow.
