Following on from her duet with Ja Rule with ‘Always On Time’ and a selection of other tunes, this female singer now brings us her debut self-titled album. It includes a combination of sounds, from the sexy and sultry sounds of ‘Rescue’ to the funky R&B flavas of ‘Baby’.
Ashanti captures the essence of what the urban streetwise beats are at the moment, and a couple of the tracks display the progression of the fusion of hip-hop and commercial R&B. Personal favourites of mine are ‘Foolish’ and ‘Unfoolish’ but that could partly be because they featured the well known Notorious B.I.G. sample. There are also a few collaborations on some of the tracks with the likes of Ja Rule, Irv Gotti and biggie lending their lyrical talents.
Ashanti Douglas can sing and has a beautiful voice. However it is early days yet and was nothing particularly distinctive that stood out for me from this collection of tunes.
If you liked ‘Always On Time’ then you might like this album. None of the tunes are a good as her partnership with Ja Rule but a few of the songs aren’t far off. It is a reasonably sound collection of tunes but don’t expect any surprises. (2˝/5)
