Whoever looked into their crystal ball and promised this band will be huge this year should start naming the lottery numbers every week. I recall scoffing at the thought of three likeable lads from Sussex sans une guitare, holding the music industry by the scuff of its neck.
First single 'Somewhere Only We Know' dangled from the same heights as Travis, posing no real threat though it crash landed at number three. Follow-up 'Everybody's Changing', however, bungee jumps and soars with Tom Chaplin's powerful voice (who looks rather like an inoffensive choir boy with his rosey cheeks and overgrown barnet), more exhilarating than the first leap each time.
Originally released on the independent Fierce Panda label last year, this record out-strips the debut single by miles. Upbeat yet poignantly emotional, 'Everybody's Changing' is mesmerising, with layer upon layer of melodies entwined for an absolutely gorgeous song - one I can't stop playing.
I rarely feel inclined to give something full marks, but I can't fight the urge this time. Superb and definitely something special. (5/5)
