Another day, another dancehall release. But guess what? It’s not a Sean Paul single, guess he must be ill this week. Instead step up Beenie Man, one of Jamaica’s more established dancehall stars with over ten albums already under his belt. This isn’t the most complex of compositions, but complex never had a monopoly on good, not at all. The right music, executed with simplicity and passion is often the best, unfortunately this is simply bad music – basic beats looping forever and a few steel drums thrown in; whilst Beenie and guest vocalist Ms Thing, who sounds as though she sings with a lisp, give us a romantic tale, dancehall style.
Virgin Records must have got their release schedule all mixed up as I thought the season for novelty records was either Christmas or summer. When you hear the lyrics like "I want a dude who will do me in his van" you know that romance and humour aren’t dead in Jamaican dancehall and this must be a new genre of novelty Valentine’s releases, the comedy dancehall love song, either that or it’s just plain garbage.
For the remix he should have dropped Ms Thing and enlisted his ex nemesis, Bounty Killa so they could have made it a homoerotic dancehall anthem – now that would be something original. (1/5)
