DVDs have now joined ‘best ofs’ on most bands’ essential pre-Christmas release catalogues it seems. Thankfully Rammstein’s Lichtspielhaus is one of the better examples. Rather than a ‘documentary’ even the most die-hard fan will only watch once and/or a collection of poor live footage, they’ve opted to make the main feature twelve full length music videos.
The band are more imaginative than many as well, so the videos offer more than just them standing around in a studio. You notice a penchant for Reservoir Dogs-style bad men in suits (‘Engel’, ‘Du Hast’ and ‘Ich Will’), but the videos are the sort that suit the band’s sinister and often violent and/or sexual music.
For variety, they throw in a couple of different videos - such as their twisted version of Snow White (‘Sonne’), Lefi Riefenstahl footage of athletes (from the 1936 Munich Olympics I assume) to accompany their version of Depeche Mode’s ‘Stripped’ (the only song in English - it sounds strangely like Coal Chamber), a werewolf-like beast in an 18th century masked party (‘Du Riechst So Gut 98’) and a load of termites in an underground rave (‘Links 2-3-4’).
‘Making of’ footage focuses on the five most interesting - revealing all about wolf contact lenses, how the band were shrunk to dwarfs up against Snow White and how they got ants to dance! With other extras including TV trailers and extensive live highlights (with a pyrotechnic set worth watching out for - particularly that filmed on the Australian Big Day Out) all in all it’s a very decent package. Obviously it won’t have much appeal to non-fans, but a few slight niggles about the German-centred language and menus aside, this is almost a model of how to put together a music DVD. (4/5)
