The Simpsons Gone Wild (PG)

It’s official.  The Simpsons have entered the adolescent stage. Since its launch over 13 years ago, Springfield’s most notorious family haven’t aged one bit. Bart is still 10 years old, Lisa remains at the age of eight and Maggie is still suctioned to that dummy. Think about it.

What isn’t taxing on the brain is this DVD, featuring four themed episodes – Homer’s Night Out, Sunday Cruddy Sunday, The Mansion Family and Homer The Moe. Yeah, you have to scratch your heads for a while on those ones – don’t quite jump out like Flaming Moe.

All these episodes have been repeated countless number of times on Sky One and BBC 2 (and probably on Channel 4 when they begin to show episodes in the autumn), though if you’re still not familiar, Homer’s Night Out is the one where Homer is sneakily snapped, bumping and grinding with a belly dancer, Sunday Cruddy Sunday is the one where the men of Springfield try to get into the Superbowl, The Mansion Family is the one where Mr Burns goes away for intense medical tests and leaves the Simpsons to house-sit his huge mansion and Homer The Moe (probably the duffest episode on here) is when Moe leaves the bar under Homer’s management while he goes back to bar tending school.

The bonus featurette is a a generic trailer to advertise the box-sets and Krusty the clown’s ‘finest’ moments. Yawn and you’ll miss them.

The Simpsons have been more wild in other episodes – the one when the kids took Patty (or was it Selma?) to Duff Beer Gardens, the one where they took Homer to Mount Splashmore and he got stuck in the tube, the one when they won a trip to Africa, any of the Tree House Of Horrors  – I could go on picking the funniest and most watchable ones.  Other than Homer’s Night Out, the others don’t pack a good punch.  For what their name is worth, it’s a disappointing collection, which won’t score high amongst its fans.  And I’m one of them.
