Hi. Doctor Mike here, serial killer. You know, a lot of my victims have asked me what it’s like to be strangled, and here I am to do my best to explain. You see, bright young things and pseudo blues-rock combo Maroon 5 have released this "hard rockin’, furious slab of pop-rock" called ‘Harder To Breathe’, and who better than me to review it?
Now, the problem with this single is really that lead singer Adam Levine continues to sing about how "it’s getting harder and harder to breathe" without actually sounding like this is the case; at no point do we hear the gasps and croaks that come so easily when you deny somebody oxygen by tightening something around their neck. No gurgling as you restrict the airflow to their windpipe, and nothing resembling so much as a snapping noise as, with one final squeeze you break their neck as easily as your average generic male might split a Twiglet.
The second, and probably more fundamental problem with this particular single, is that it’s been done before, and better, by the likes of Reef, Gun, pre-burnout Lenny Kravitz, Black Sabbath (for that heavy riffing), and a cast of thousands of others including, perversely, Status Quo. In fact, five minutes after listening to it, I couldn’t remember a single thing about it other than I didn’t particularly want to ever have to hear it again. Boring.
