Everything old becomes new again, and that is most definitely true of the old standards. Twenty-eight-year-old Bublé breaks them down into easily digestible gems.
Come Fly With Me is a CD/DVD combo. The latter is the main attraction, with 12 live songs, and commentary by Bublé and his band. As shown in the behind-the-scenes footage, the guys are all typical 20-somethings – backstage antics include poker games, cocktail swilling, and ass-kicking. Behind those modern day boys are some of the most beautiful songs ever laid down on CD.
Bublé is a crooner, covering everyone from Elvis to Van Morrison to George Michael. He purrs his way through songs, his smoldering voice giving life to long dead tunes. ‘Kissing A Fool’ oozes sex appeal – on the DVD, Bublé is doing nothing more than sitting on a stool whilst singing, yet he’s able to melt virtually any woman.
Giving homage to his favourite artist Bobby Darin, Bublé adds a little Presley flavour to ‘Mack The Knife’. It’s bluesy, jazzy and delightful. As an added bonus, viewers get a little soft-shoe action.
Another stand-out is the classic ‘My Funny Valentine’. Bublé’s version is haunting and reminiscent of Angelo Badalamenti (he did the music for Twin Peaks). It’s dark and delicious, much like the man himself. I suggest you try a spoonful. (5/5)
