Description: 14 tracks of mostly contemporary music either Brazilian in origin or inspired by Brazilian music taking in samba, jazz, bossa nova, house, hip-hop and drum & bass. Which means? It’s actually stuff you might have heard bits of before, music from adverts – Ikea, Nissan, Citroen – alongside a couple of tracks from the film ‘City Of God’ and a Brazilian remix of an Everything But The Girl track. Is it much cop? Well there’s no sign of ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ on here, which is a good start. How many good tracks? About eight or nine tracks from the 14 on here. ‘Capoeria’ – a drum & bass tune from UK crew Infrared with Brazilian vocalist Gil Felix is a particular favourite as is the Morcheeba mixed track ‘Trains’ by Cibelle, which with her soft and soulful vocals would sit happily on any number of laidback/chill out compilations. ‘Freestyle Love’ reminds me of MC Solaar but maybe that’s because I’m not used too listening to anyone rapping not in English, ‘Acenda O Farol’ is a funky and soulful gem and the gentle drum and bass of ‘Sambissim’ is as much for laying back and enjoying as dancing too. And the bad? None of it is bad per se; some of it fails to gel like the pedestrian house remix of ‘Convite Para Vida’, from ‘City Of God’ in particular. ‘Take It Easy My Brother Charles’ and ‘Quem Que Catuetou’ also stood out as substandard on an otherwise quality compilation. Biggest disappointment: That I’ve never been to Brazil, that this probably won’t do as well as it deserves too. Oh and that I can’t work my word processor well enough to get the right accents on some of the letters in the song titles. Verdict: At 14 tracks it doesn’t outstay it’s welcome and is a interesting genre defying mix of different styles through which there’s an unmistakable flavour with ties it all together, pretty much, seamlessly. If you’re remotely into Brazilian music then this would make a solid purchase. (3½/5)
