Description: The Anti-Nazi League have compiled exclusive tracks and remixes from some of Britain’s biggest bands to swell their coffers and spread the word. Which means? Some of the UK’s biggest acts (Sugababes, Doves, Basement Jaxx) and some of the lesser known ones (er, Bees, Jaimeson) unite under the Anti-Nazi League flag. Undoubtedly a worthy cause, but is the CD worth owning in its’ own right? Is it much cop? Yes and no. What do I mean, “yes and no”? Let me put it like this. Sometimes, great tunes don’t need remixing. Sometimes, a remix can take a solid piece of pop and turn it into a steaming piece of poop. How many good tracks? Of the 17, there are a few highlights. Turin Brakes’ cover of Shaggy’s ‘Angel’, segueing effortlessly into Steve Miller’s ‘The Joker’, is a treat. Panjabi MC’s conversion of Knight Rider into bhangra for 'Mundian To Bach Ke' needs to be heard, if you don't already know it. Misty In Roots turn in some trademark skank reggae, and Milltown Brothers ‘Everything’ is a great piece of acoustic rock. And the worst? The Bees’ attempt to pull out some ‘blue-eyed soul’ is horrible, and sounds as clumsy as your grandfather dancing at a wedding after four bottles of stout. Seani B’s remix of the Sugababes’ ‘Round Round’ should have been left on the cutting room floor (along with their clothes, mmm) and Billy Bragg just isn’t a man you remix. The evidence of ‘why’ is on here. A lot of the remixes are pretty poor. Biggest disappointment? With a few notable exceptions, the remixes and “exclusive” tracks could have been so much stronger. The compilation has been produced with good intentions, but bad execution lets it down. I’m very surprised not to see everyone’s favourite cider-guzzling, dog-on-string parading, Levellers on here. Verdict: A fairly lacklustre compilation CD that won’t win the cause any new followers, or do too much to boost the coffers. Any sales will most likely be based on the cause, not the content. (2½/5)
