Description: "Until now, nobody has known how our clubbing ancestors developed into the sophisticated dance-floor tribes we see around us. Ibiza - The History Of House can allow the full story to unfold." Which means? Contrary to popular belief (based upon observation of the racks in "all good record stores", groaning under the weight of compilation after compilation), there's always room for one more. Perhaps record companies are engaged in a new version of 'Buckaroo', seeing how many more they can bang out before the shelves give way and crush innocent shoppers to death. That, and the lack of new music in the summer months. Is it much cop? Yes, actually, it is! At least 80% of this is worth listening to. Firmly at the chart-dance end of house music, the compilation combines accessible dance tracks with what I believe those in the know call "banging beats." Which is nice. How many good tracks? Well, you get 50 tracks to choose from, and there's a lot of quality. Armand Van Helden's remix of 'Professional Widow', Modjo's 'Lady', Josh Wink's 'Higher State Of Consciousness', Orbital's 'Chime' are all examples of what good dance music sounds like. Ditto the earlier items by Guy Called Gerald and Frankie Knuckles. And finishing with the 12" remix of New Order's 'Blue Monday' is inspired. And the worst? What on earth is Robert Miles doing on here? And Dario G? Ugh. Please. Underworld's 'Born Slippy' has become a huge cliché and should be dropped into a hole in the space-time continuum. Biggest disappointment? Only that Underworld have released far better singles than 'Born Slippy', and there's only one Leftfield track. The superior French house scene (Super Discount, Etienne De Crecy) is unrepresented. Verdict: Like your chart music? Like your dance music? You should own this. Great party soundtrack. Sanitised, clean and unthreatening, it's the acceptable face of House. Not a bad thing. Don't expect controversy, just some great tunes. (4/5)
