J-Pop (Tofu)
By Michael Hulme
Tuesday, 07 October 2003
Description:
"This CD takes you on a similar journey from Anime to J-Pop. It is a sample of the latest songs and a few classics from the best of Sony Music Japan’s artists. This is a great starting place to see what all the buzz is about".
Which means?
Half this CD is composed of theme tunes from Japanese Anime (cartoon animation) series. This is similar to western acts providing the Bond theme tune, for example - it isn’t unusual for the Japanese top 10 to have seven or eight theme tunes in the top 10.  Even megastars Puffy have provided the Teen Titans theme tune, so no sneering at the back. The remainder of the CD is more orthodox J-Pop.
Is it much cop?
It should be, seeing as they’ve a pretty extensive vault to mine.  And it is. Hurrah!
How many good tracks?
Of the 15, 11 are worthy of investigation. The highlights of those include Tommy February, who sound a little like New Order with a good singer. Judy And Mary are charming in a Eurodisco kind of way. Mika Nakashima’s 'Crescent Moon' is cute, happy and completely throwaway, which is just how we like our pop music, isn’t it?  The Brilliant Green are, well, brilliant.
And the worst?
T.M. Revolution’s 'Invoke' sounds like the kind of thing Dario G would knock up in their lunch hour.  Someone should make Ken Hirai listen to some Prince records to try to convince him that it’s been done before, and better.
Biggest disappointment?
Where’s Puffy?  Well, no matter.
Verdict:
It does exactly what it promises to do - drawing on pop, indie, rock, dance and disco, there is something here for everyone. A good introduction for sure. The inclusion of lyrics and a booklet is another good feature - where else could you find such charming lyrics as "Raining all day, going away, blowing a kiss to me, hello amazing day?"  Exactly.
