Friends Reunited: The 90s (Umtv)
By Emily Gkikas
Monday, 04 August 2003
Description:
Following on from the Friends Reunited 80s compilation released earlier this year, we now have a CD of 90s nostalgia. CD one is more indie/party orientated whereas CD two has all the mush. Thousands of people nominated their chosen songs for this CD on the Friends Reunited website.
Which means:
The Friends Reunited team are hoping to add more to their millions by cashing in on the ‘school disco’ phenomenon that seems to be doing the rounds at the minute.
Is it much cop?
There are some good tracks on there, but like any compilation album, there are one or two fillers that are hardly anthems of the 90s. Some of the tracks I am a bit dubious about whether they were released in the 90s as well, but that could be just me!
How many good tracks?
Out of 40 I would say about 27, so not a bad run for your money! I’d pick Pulp’s ‘Common People’, ‘Never Ever’ by All Saints and the student classic ‘Sit Down’ by James particularly stand out.
And the worst?
I have never been a fan of The Lighthouse Family; they are so bland and all there songs sound the same, so the track ‘Ocean Drive’ is one I could do without.  The same goes for ‘Unbreak My Heart’ by Toni Braxton.  Great love song?  Dreary dirge more like!  (But the remix is good! – Ed)
Biggest disappointment?
On the Friends Reunited website it clearly states that they couldn’t get all tracks cleared by bands or managers. I don’t know if this is the case but it seems to have led to great artists being chosen but crap songs.  For example, we have Kylie on there, but the song is ‘Tears On My Pillow’ – a cover version might I add.  Out of all of her songs in the 90s, that doesn’t seem to me to be a good choice! This is also true for New Kids On The Block (‘I’ll Be Loving You) and George Michael (‘Praying For Time’).
Verdict:
There is a good span of songs from across the 90s from Dee-lite’s ‘Groove Is In The Heart’, to more recent tunes such as ‘S Club Party’, when S Club were known as S Club 7 – see there’s some nostalgia for you already!
