Empire Presents Soundtracks (Umtv)
By Afsheen Shaikh
Monday, 14 April 2003
Description:
The biggest hits from the biggest movies, as carefully selected by Empire magazine, the UK's number one selling movie rag.
Which means?
The most timeless theme tunes from some of the most obvious flicks of the last two decades.
Is it much cop?
You name it, it's on here - The Beach, Trainspotting, The Matrix, xXx, Spiderman, A Life Less Ordinary, Daredevil...  In some cases, it's the actual song that is the only thing good about the (usually poor) film.  To make this album a little bit special (and seeing as Empire writes about movies), the compilation also features a bonus DVD disc containing four classic videos from the likes of U2 with 'Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me (Batman Forever) and Ash with 'A Life Less Ordinary', to name but a few. The DVD also includes selected footage from the last Empire awards.
How many good tracks?
13 definite ones out of a total of 19.  Although some tracks chosen may not come as a surprise, it's still a wonder they still sound fantastic: U2's 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me' and All Saints' 'Pure Shores'.
And the worst?
'A Life Less Ordinary' by Ash.  A lame track for an equally lame movie.
Biggest disappointment?
Censorship of some of the cheeky words in Wheatus' 'Teenage Dirtbag'.  Come on, grow up!
Verdict:
A handy compilation that tastefully cherry-picks the juiciest hits from Hollywood and Brit flicks.  And the DVD is a superb treat too.
