50 First Dates (Maverick)
By Nigel Valentine
Monday, 05 April 2004
I can’t remember where I saw it but I once did see a spoof TV ad for a compilation CD called Bernard Manning Sings The Smiths, which had the brusque northern comic dancing around with daffodils in his pocket singing ‘Girlfriend In A Coma’ and ‘Ask’.  Looking at the line up for this, I am reminded of Bernard and the genius of proper parody.  This must be some sort of spoof too, surely?  80s love songs performed in a reggae-lite style. Unfortunately not though, it seems this is a deadly serious attempt to make proper album.

In essence we have a bunch of second raters (with the sole exception of Seal) including Wayne Wonder, Ziggy Marley, Wyclef Jean, Mark McGrath and UB40 covering a selection of 80s pop and indie love songs from Roxy Music, The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs, Echo and the Bunnymen, UB40 and The Police.  It’s just physically difficult to listen to, it makes you squirm and feel uncomfortable, as if you’ve just walked into a funeral, only to discover you’re in the wrong one, and you’re too embarrassed to leave. If you’re a fan of any of the above bands then, please, please, do yourself a favour and avoid this at all costs, any respect or appreciation you had for the original will be destroyed.

The only good thing I can say about this is that The Thompson Twins, whose song ‘Hold Me Now’ opens the CD, will get some money from the publishing rights for this.

I’ve not seen the film, but I know the premise in so far as Drew Barrymore has short-term memory problems waking up every day anew, with Adam Sandler then romancing her again and again, until the inevitable denouement.  After listening to this, I wish I had Drew’s problem and I could go back to the day before I had to listen to this.
