Dead Man Walking

Picked by Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and spun into the Spiderman soundtrack, Vancouver's Theory Of A Deadman are next setting sights on the other side of the atlantic, as uk-fusion found out from the band's guitarist Dave Brenner

You recently supported 3 Doors Down on their UK tour in March.  Were you excited about that?
We’ve been opening for the band for the last few months.  We did an American tour with them and now we’ve done this whole European thing.  I think we’re doing another American tour with them, so yeah, we’re always excited.  I’m excited just for playing in London actually; some of the European crowds have been kinda different.  German crowds were really good and the Holland crowd were as good but they were more reserved.
How did you come together as a band?
The four of us came together about three years ago and I was the last one to join the band (I was playing in a different band before).  My band broke up so I phoned Tyler up and said “Hey, let’s jam” and he said “Sure, come on over”, so I did.
..and as they say, the rest is history.  How has it affected the band after getting a spot on the Spiderman soundtrack [with the track 'Invisible Man']?
That was awesome because that happened before our record came out.  I don’t think anything could have really prepared us for what was to come, though.  Our lifestyles changed drastically overnight.  Basically, we were four guys who had never done extensive touring.  They put us on a bus...we’ve been on that for the last seven months, non-stop.
What do you think of Hollywood’s rediscovery of super-heroes?
I’m not a big comic fan.  I think it’s fine but I thought the X-Men movie sucked.  Spiderman was a pretty good movie…I haven’t seen Dare Devil yet, I don’t know if I will.  It’s not really my thing.
What kind of movies do you like?
I like thinking movies like The Usual Suspects.  I also like funny dark comedies like Army Of Darkness.

What would you do if you were invisible?
Um, maybe I’d try to take a week off!  (laughs)  And go home!
Where do the comparisons between you and Nickelback stop?
I think we’re a much heavier band than Nickelback especially with our live shows.  We’re just straight up rock’n’roll music, which is good because I like to think we’re just a rock band.  I guess Nickelback’s a rock band too.
Don't you think the whole MOR grunge revival is dead and Canada should stick to female songwriters (Alanis, Avril, Celine) instead?
Canada has some amazing female singers and it seems like every other week, they pop up!  I think Canada is good for a lot more than just one type of music.  There are some great bands like this rap, R&B style band called Swollen Members out of Vancouver, who are just awesome - I can’t believe they haven’t made it anywhere else.  We have stuff like that everywhere.  We have death metal bands in Vancouver that are awesome…we have everything!  Canada's sick of being known for Celine Dions and Shania Twains.
Do you reckon Chad gets a hard time from the press (who’ve branded him the ugliest man in rock)?
I heard about that!  I don’t think he really cares about them! (laughsI don’t think he’s the ugliest man in rock.
Your songs focus a lot on relationships – what’s wrong with us girls?
Oh God, nothing at all!  I don’t know what you’re talking about!  I didn’t write the lyrics actually so I guess [frontman] Tyler maybe has a little bit of an angst towards women.  Of course I don’t share the same angst!  (laughs) He’s writing songs that people can relate to.  I don’t think a lot of the songs are gender biased, though.  A girl could be thinking the same thing as the guy when listening to the song...
What are your favourite tracks off your album?
I've  got two.  I got a favourite track to play live, which is ‘Any Other Way’ and my favourite actual song is ‘The Last Song’.  I think it’s the master-piece on the album.
When you’re on the road, what don’t you leave home without?
I've got about 30 pictures of my girlfriend I always bring with me and I put them up in my bed on the bus.  They just surround me ‘cos that’s the thing that I miss the most.
Do you believe in life after death?
I don’t know what I believe in!  I definitely don’t believe this is it.  I think something has to happen after but I don’t know what exactly.
What famous person would you like to see ressurrected?
You know honestly, I think it would be Layne Staley [Alice In Chains frontman who overdosed on a cocktail of drugs in April 2002].  I was really upset when he died and that’s just too bad.  I think he was one of the most amazing singers of all time and it was sad to see him taken away so quickly.
Are you aware the abbreviation of the band’s name is ‘TOAD’?  An unfortunate acronym.
Yeah, we get that every time!  We’re not big fans of that - people who call us TOAD for short.  If people want to shorten it, we prefer to be called Theory.  TOAD just doesn’t seem like it fits!
What’s in your CD player right now?
You’ve probably set me off on an unusual one but I just bought the new Hank Williams III CD.  It’s a straight up country record and I think it’s just phenomenal.
Can we expect to see you at one of the UK festivals this year?
I hope so.  There’s talk about that right now with us and what we want to do.  We still haven’t actually toured Canada, which we do wanna do sometime soon, but I would love to come out here again. We’ve only had eight or nine days in Europe and I’ve had the best time.  I thought the cities were phenomenal, I would love to be able to spend more time here so I hope we get to come out here again.
