He’s green, disgusting, sarcastic, inexplicably Scottish, and back. Beginning where the original Shrek left off, the ogre (Mike Myers) is now happily married to his Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and residing in the swamp. All is well until Fiona receives word that her parents, the King and Queen of Far, Far Away, want to hold a ball to celebrate her new marriage. After persuasion, the ogres, accompanied by Donkey (Eddie Murphy) set off on their journey.
Far, Far Away is Hollywood. It’s amusing to see the shop names altered to fit the animated satirical world. There are even two Farbucks Coffee shops on opposite corners of the street.
Needless to say, the King and Queen (John Cleese and Julie Andrews) are shocked as hell to find their daughter is now not only an ogre, but married to one. As Fiona was meant to marry Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), the King and Fiona’s Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders) conspire to kill Shrek – the assassin, one Puss in Boots. Antonia Banderas’ kitty killer is absolutely the highlight of the movie.
Without revealing too much, I can only say this is a must-see. This is one sequel that tops the original. There are so many sexual innuendoes aimed at the adult audience, grown-ups are practically guaranteed to laugh throughout. I nearly pissed myself with the muffin man/Ghostbusters reference. Many scenes are rips-offs of 80s flicks, and done fairytale style. Look for a poster of Sir Justin on Fiona’s bedroom wall. Absolute brilliance. (5/5)
