Whether presenting cult 80s music show The Tube, tinkling the old ivories on an array of Squeeze and solo albums, or hosting arguably the UK’s most important live music show of the past decade (‘Later…’ in case that’s not clear), pint-sized Jools Holland has always been a true living legend and a real ambassador for great music.
OK, so his vocals aren’t the best in the world and this comes across on much of his solo work, but it’s his popularity and status that has made him the man he is and what has led to him recording three (so far) fantastic albums where he has collaborated with the cream of musicians from around the world. Many of those artists at one time or another have appeared on ‘Later…’ and it’s the live energy of the show’s performances which have always given it the edge.
This special DVD release, gathers together live performances from several of Jools’ New Year’s Eve Hootenanny shows from over the years and make no mistake, it’s a real treat. Don’t think for a minute that this is something that can only be enjoyed at this time of year, either. Performances from the likes of Ray Davies, Jimmy Cliff, Sharleen Spiteri, Sam Brown, Paul Weller and the late Robert Plant are amongst the best in the show’s history and are delight to watch time and again.
Standout moments come from David McAlmont as he performs a stunning rendition of ‘Misty Blue’ and Bryan Ferry singing ‘Let’s Stick Together’. There’s also a great big band-style version of ‘T Bone Shuffle’ from Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall and of course the seasonal favourite ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ by Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews.
Just hope that this is waiting for you underneath the Christmas tree this year. You’ll be delighted. (5/5)
