Family Values Tour: 1998 (15)
By Afsheen Shaikh

Dedicated fans of noisy rock'n'roll will recognise the significance of the Family Values tour.  Specifically playing to mass audiences in the States only, this annual event hails the biggest names in rock and metal under one roof, and with past guests such as Linkin Park, Staind, Stone Temple Pilots, Static X, Limp Bizkit and Korn creating huge tidal waves, one can only imagine the damage these noisy hounds can collectively cause to the average punter's ears and ribs.

For the first time, the tour of 1998 has been released on DVD and video, showcasing five acts from five big shows between Virginia and New Orleans: Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Rammstein, Orgy and headliners Korn.

Back in 1998, Limp Bizkit weren't nearly as huge as they are now, so it's interesting to see them open the tour and play (what is now considered) their very early stuff, and they sound brilliant as they charge through 'Counterfeit', 'Cambodia', 'Faith' and do a terrific take on House Of Pain's 'Jump Around' (of whom DJ Lethal was a part of before joining the Bizkit crew).  That, and only that, is the highlight of this compilation that charts a tour that took place almost four years ago.  Since then, bigger and better groups have performed but on this particular tour, only Limp Bizkit and Korn are still as strong as they were back then.  The rest just suck.

The confusing editing doesn't run consistently, with backstage footage and snippets of interviews popping up irregularly and the navigation of the disc is rather poor, not to mention the graphics.  At least for the DVD, there should have been lengthier interviews with each group but instead we see members of Korn having their make-up done and playing around with their babies.  Very maternal indeed.  And there's a rather disturbing shot of a groupie showing off her nipple ring.

With five groups on the billing, there really isn't enough on the set-list that could satisfy the hunger.  Limp Bizkit get four songs, Korn have six, Orgy go with three, Ice Cube has four and Rammstein get just two - which is just as well because they are bloody awful.

Apart from Limp Bizkit, there is one other thing that is flawless and that is the digital surround sound and picture quality from the DVD itself.  As something which is meant to be momentous and entertaining, unintentionally the skip button comes into frequent use.  No fan will be bowled over by this outdated video which has been released far too late.  It's too dull.
