Live music DVDs can be a bit hit or miss and often fail to replicate the true feeling of what it was like to have actually been at the concert. Because of this the majority are really not worth watching more than once. Thankfully, Morcheeba have managed to come up trumps with this DVD, which is a joyful experience from start to finish.
The action begins with a fan’s perspective of the full Brixton experience, as a speeded up camcorder film takes the viewer from the tube station, up the escalators, past the numerous touts (buying and selling tickets) along the street, round the corner to the venue, through the doors, past the frisking security staff and even to the over-crowded bar. It’s a nice touch and an instantly recognisable one for anyone who’s ever been to the Brixton Academy.
On to the actual music and Morcheeba manage to reproduce their amazing chilled-out sounds on stage and if anything their live sound is even better. The band look comfortable and happy to be performing together and Skye is a wonderful front woman and a great focal point. Tracks like ‘Otherwise’, ‘Part Of The Process’, ‘Trigger Hippie’ and ‘Way Beyond’ sound fantastic live and it’s good to see the likes of ‘Aqualung’, ‘Get Along’ and ‘Slow Down’ getting an airing, as none of them appear on the accompanying retrospective album Parts Of The Process.
The additional footage takes the viewer on a fascinating tour of China, where the band performed earlier in the year as part of a project set up by the British Council to bring the best of Britain’s originality, creativity and innovation to the country. The documentary includes insightful interviews with the three bandmates Skye, Paul and Ross and is interspersed with performances from their gig in Beijing.
Far short of a warm beer and some sweaty bloke rubbing against you, this is as close to the real thing as you could imagine and is a welcome addition to the Morcheeba catalogue. (5/5)
