Lenny Kravitz: Where Are We Runnin'? (Virgin)
By Nigel Valentine
Monday, 10 May 2004

Frequently, in the sheltered world of pop and rock success, musicians, singers, artists and maybe even the odd member of boy bands start to feel they are getting stale and staid.

They hanker for the excitement they felt at the first flush of success and use this to fuel a reinvention to a degree. Sometimes producing a fresh creative period (think U2 circa Achtung Baby) or embarrassments, which almost sully their former glories (David Bowie’s Tin Machine or drum & bass experiments).

He is however embracing new media with this his debut single from his forthcoming seventh studio album, Baptism, as this is an internet only release.

Well first impressions aren’t great and I haven’t even heard the thing yet, but the picture - what the fuck have you done to your hair? You used to have this rock sex god look going on, and now you look like a cross between Prince and James Brown (circa 1974).

Back to the music and the back to the beginning bullshit. Musically it’s upbeat Kravitz rock through and through meaning it’s still as derivative as hell with Lenny playing every instrument too. Sounding like a substandard version of ‘Fly Away’ isn’t going to get this single mentioned in the same sentence as ‘Let Love Rule’ or ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way?’ except when being compared unfavourably with them.

Like paint by numbers, this is Kravitz rock (Jimi Hendrix and Sly & The Family Stone) by numbers and these days that’s about as exhilarating as tea and biscuits.
