There was always a unwritten rule in hip-hop that if you made it big as a solo artist you’d try and score a deal for your friends or crew. Ice Cube (post NWA) did it with The Lench Mob, Biggie Smalls with Junior Mafia but more recently it seems the solo artists use their friend’s groups as a part time job – Eminem has D12 and now 50 Cent has G Unit.
Alongside 50 are Lloyd Banks and Young Buck; there’s a fourth member also - Tony Yayo but he’s in gaol at present, for parole violation after his recent release in Jan 04. The Lench Mob lost founder member J-Dee after an attempted murder conviction so I guess the G Unit are just following the same game plan. Any way Tony does still feature on their album, but I guess he won’t be touring anytime soon.
Prison and nepotism aside the single is a party tune, a ‘fuck’ anthem basically, like LL Cool J’s ‘I Need Love’ for the new century replacing love for sex. They throw in the obligatory label references – Gucci, Mercedes et al and the chorus is all R&B vocals. Their rapping is what you’d expect from mainstream hip-hop these days – uninspired and unoriginal but fortunately this being a group effort, means 50 Cent’s lisp heavily delivery is only present a third of the time (a bonus); and I cannot fault their choice of samples to base this on – Marvin Gaye’s lesser known track ‘Come Live With Me Angel’ is a laid back piece of classic funky soul. In fact the instrumental track on the single is the best thing here.
They never said what the 'G' stands for, I guess it’s probably something original like 'gangster', should be 'garbage' though. (2/5)
