Bath (UK)
By Manjit Plaha

Where is it?
Towards the south west of England, near Bristol.  Or in Avon to be precise.

Where should I be heading?
Bath is a small city, so most hotels will be near the main attractions.

Entry requirements:

If you’re coming from outside the UK, you’ll need to meet the obligatory requirements for entry into the country.

Health:
Bath is a very clean and tidy city.  I didn’t see anything which would cause you to worry about your health – apart from not stretching before climbing the hills.  Trust me, some are very steep.

Top 5 things to do:
1.  Stonehenge – an absolutely amazing place.  Bath isn’t the nearest town to Stonehenge, but it is about an hour drive away and it's definitely worth a trip.  On the free audio guide, many theories are given about mystery surrounding those huge and precisely placed stones – it’ll give you goose bumps.

2.  Jane Austen walk – even if you are not a big fan of Jane Austen, this is worth doing.  Her two novels Persuasion and Northanger Abbey are largely set in Bath and on this tour you can see exactly where Jane has set certain scenes of the books.  My favourite was Union Square where in Persuasion Anne Eliot and her beau confessed their love for each other.  *sigh*    This should be the first thing you do in Bath, as you get a feel for the city and where the other main attractions are located.

3.  Take a walk round the residential areas – yes, I know this sounds strange but there are some beautiful old houses in Bath.  Also this historical city is located in a valley so you will climbing hills accounts for some spectacular views.

4.  Visit the Roman Baths and Pump Room – the baths in Bath are fascinating and you cannot go to Bath without visiting this place.

5.  Eat buns at Sally Lunn’s – this is the oldest house in Bath and where Sally Lunn made buns.  Obviously.  They are still made today and are absolutely delicious.  The recipe for these buns can only be obtained if you have the deeds of the house, however.

Is it expensive?
It can be.  Be aware, the number of tourists out-number the locals, so some restaurants, for example, can be expensive.

What's the food like?
There are many different cuisines available so you will not have any trouble finding something you like.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Yes, although the water in the River Avon may be unsuitable.

What are the toilets like?
Normal.

What to wear:
Anything.

Best time to visit:
Any time of year is fine, but some of the walks may not be available in the winter months –check before you go.

Don't miss:
The whole city is just fabulous.  The buildings are so beautiful and it is such a laid-back place.  I can see why it is a world heritage city.

Most overrated thing:
Bizarre Bath.  The BBC holiday programme may have recommended it, but in my opinion it was not really that funny.  It was mainly aimed at Americans and Aussies and has been going for over 10 years.
