Matchbox Twenty: Show – A Night In The Life Of…
By Nickta Hafezi
Friday, 02 July 2004
Matchbox Twenty is a band that’s gained a loyal fan base from the beginning of their career.  From the release of their debut Yourself Or Someone Like You, their mainstream American rock has excelled especially so with the crooning voice of Rob Thomas, who gained international acclaim with his collaboration with Santana on ‘Smooth’, winning three Grammy Awards.

Fortunately, this stardom coincided with the release of their second album Mad Season.  With their third and most recent LP in the bag, More Than You Think You Are, all five members of Matchbox Twenty have pushed their great talent and enthusiasm for music further and it’s delightfully illustrated in this divine DVD box-set.

As the title suggests, this is a revelation in a night in the life of the band on tour.  The documentary includes all members’ views in equal shares and shows the quirky humour backstage before, during and after concerts.

The live concert was recorded at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on 28 June 2003.  I had the privilege of attending their London gig on their European leg of the tour in September last year.  It was a fantastic night and although a DVD can never match a live performance, this box set is a great memorabilia piece and in addition, includes great enhancements so that the entire concert can be heard with depth and clarity.

Recorded in 5.1 PCM stereo, there is the choice of two different playback environments, stereo and 5.1 surround sound with superb visual effects, including multiple angles.  In fact, on two of the tracks (‘Soul’ and ‘Bright Lights’), you can change the camera angle by highlighting one of the four mini-screens that pop up underneath a main screen.

A generous serving for devotees, it's a great introduction to new listeners as well.  Nothing beats Matchbox Twenty live and here is the best recording of their live performances you will get for a while to come.
