Club Dread (Sanctuary)
By Nigel Valentine

Come the summer, come the shit films; or so the old saying goes. But shit film or not, this isn’t a review of Club Dread the film, a Scary Movie meets Fantasy Island shitfest if I ever saw one. No, this is just a soundtrack and me; no washed-up actors, no spoof horror, no drugs (unfortunately).

OK, so the title might give away the contents of the soundtrack somewhat, and yeah you’d be right it’s wall-to-wall reggae from start to finish. Now reggae isn’t much in the charts these days, but its bastard child dancehall seems to be doing OK and Sean Paul and Beenie Man have a lot of musical crimes to answer for, so you would maybe expect this to be packed with dancehall floor fillers and other such trash, but no, it’s pretty much all old school reggae (can reggae be old school? Well it can now) with not a hip-hop beat or reference to dutty in sight.

So what so we actually have on here then?  Well it ranges from a high water mark of Dillinger’s ‘Cocaine In My Brain’ from the 1970-something to low of a Felix Da Housecat remix of Yellowman’s ‘Party’, originally from 1996 which is quite an accomplishment as the original (also on here) is crap.  Felix manages to make it even worse by housing it up into a track of headache inducing proportions.

In between, there is the minor gem and slightly ragga infused ‘Gun In A Baggy’ by Little Lenny, some obscure Bob Marley track, some pop reggae care of Gregory Issacs and a touch of ska just to cover all the history bases. Lee Scratch Perry, possibly the most stoned man in popular culture (even more so than Howard Marks) pops up with a couple of contributions and the best song title award on here is won by ‘Long Shot Kick De Bucket’ by The Pioneers, an otherwise mediocre mid-tempo reggae.

This is like junk food, sourced to be cheap so hence it’s mostly nasty.
