How do you feel about being called a ‘super group’?
S: Everybody says it – we hate it!  We were all individually so fucking desperate to get into a band situation where we felt comfortable without having to conform to what other people were doing.  For years we have all been jamming around, trying to get our lives together and trying to play.  We had no intention just because of where we were from, of making what you call a ‘super group’.  When we all got together, it was just the five of us; there was no support from anybody.  It’s hard to explain but it’s not a super group.
What are you plans for the summer?
S: We had the opportunity to play Rock In Rio – I think Guns played at that one.  Axl wouldn’t even let me into a Guns N’Roses show.  I got there and the entire building was waiting for me!  The security for the hotel and the gig wouldn’t let me in because management knew that if Axl found out I was in the audience, he might not play!
This was the Vegas show on New Year’s Eve (2001), right?
S: Yeah, yeah.  I haven’t talked to him in about eight years.
So you’re not on his Christmas card list?
S: No but we send him Christmas cards!  (laughs)
Do you look back at old photos and think “my God, what was my hairdresser thinking?!”
D: I was my own hairdresser!  I remember the whole Appetite For Destruction time.  The Illusions tour started to get foggy – that whole tour was pretty fucked.  It was a massive issue, I will never let that happen again.
Do you think there will ever be any new Guns material?
S: It has to happen.  When a record company makes a move like this one, there’s only more to come.  Axl has been recording on a mere budget so if worse comes to worse, they will put out whatever he’s recorded but I think he’s going to get it together and I’m really interested.  I think it will give us all a sense of resolve and closure when he gets the record out so we can see whatever it was that he was going on about.
Duff, you’re doing a degree at Seattle University, aren’t you?
D: Yeah, it’s at the Albert School of Business and Finance.  I left school to join this band!
Did you quit?
D: I didn’t quit!  I got a semester left!  It might be in 20 years but I’ll finish that shit!
Who do you rate at the moment?
D: I  love the new OutKast record [Speakerboxx/The Love Below]– it’s like old Curtis Mayfield shit.  It’s the best record (pardon my French) to fuck to.  Dave Grohl has done a great job of the Foo Fighters and there are tonnes of other underground bands from Seattle like Supersuckers – just anything that’s passionate and well written, I’ll give a chance.  We named our first daughter Grace – I don’t know if you’ve heard Jeff Buckley’s ‘Grace’ record – she was conceived to that.  Music has a lot to do with our kids!  [Slash’s first child, London was apparently conceived...well, go figure.]
What do you think of The Darkness?
D: We heard The Darkness record and we were fucking howling.  It’s hilarious, right?  We thought it was a piss-take but it’s not, which is surprising to me.  They’ve sold like a million and a half records here and people take them seriosuly.  They must be having a laugh somewhere.
Have you seen the video for ‘Love Is Only A Feeling’?  It is filmed on a cliff top a la 'November Rain'.
D: No, I don’t watch much TV.
It’s a tribute to you.
D: Really?
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
D: I gotta see this video! Yeah, they’re a phenomenon, that’s for sure.
Slash, how are you adjusting to fatherhood?
S: How am I adjusting to fatherhood?  I’m doing pretty good, I think.  The little guy seems to love me very much, so I think we’re all cool.  There’s a lot more domestic shit that goes on that I’m not used to but other than that, it’s wonderful.  I brought him here ‘cos we’re going to raise him the way my parents raised me.  My parents were in the business as well, and I cut my teeth on the whole primadonna popstar environment when I was growing up.  It braced me for what I was going to get into later on, so I figured I will drag him around with me.  I’ve got another one on the way so I’ll have two little rock’n’roll kids, a rock’n’roll family!  Hey, all my heros have done it!  [Since this interview was conducted, Slash has become a father for the second time to a son he's named, er, Cash.  Congratulations on the new nipper, Mr and Mrs Hudson.]
