Mania is 25-year-old Niara Scarlett, and 27-year-old Giselle Sommerville. They met under the creative guidance of Brian Higgins. Niara is a North London girl (from Kentish Town) and Giselle was born and raised in Sussex. Girls from diverse backgrounds with not only harmony, but also an irritating ability to make you want to sing along with them.
‘Looking For A Place’ is Mania’s debut single. It’s aimed at the popular music scene but has a distinctive groove to it. The lyrics are blunt and girl power rings true in my ears with lyrics such as “I sleep where I want to be, try stopping me, don’t want to be like you”.
It’s not so much Britpop but somewhere between soul and teen pop. There seems to have been a great deal of creative input, and with rhymes aplenty, they aren't a million miles away from the Sugababes with a catchy, whistling chorus to match, like one of those suckers that stays in the brain for weeks. Let’s hope Mania does not disappear into one-hit-wonder heaven, since both girls have impressive voices and talent as both singers and songwriters.
