If you are under 15, then you may have heard of teenage chick flick 13 Going On 30 hoping to ensnare the young ‘uns whilst on their school holidays. If you are over 25 then you may have actually heard of some of the songs on the soundtrack of said movie. Set in 1987, the story is about a 13-year-old girl who makes a wish to be a grown-up, and the next day awakens to find herself a successful 30-year-old woman. Again, those of you over 25 may well remember a very similar film in the late 80s which helped catapult Tom Hanks to fame. In fact, it sounds identical, apart from the gender of the lead stars. Any way!
The 13 track CD has some absolute 80s classics: Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, Vanilla Ice’s anthem (don’t let anyone tell you Eminem was the first white rapper) ‘Ice Ice Baby’, the last dance at the school disco ‘Crazy For You’ by Madonna and Soft Cell’s ‘Tainted Love’. There are also some recognisable artists in there like Belinda Carlisle and Billy Joel, but I’ll be darned if I have ever heard of the songs (‘Mad About You’ and ‘Vienna’ respectively).
There are a couple of new songs which on first reading I thought were some obscure 80s group, but on listening to the song realised, they definitely weren’t! In fact, one of the best songs of the album is ‘Will I Ever Make It Home’ by Ingram Hill. There is also new music from Lillix.
Some good classics, yes but not worth shelling out just for the smattering of new songs. The film doesn't look any better. (2/5)
