Harsh Realm (18)
By Nickta Hafezi

Harsh Realm has never featured on British television and was axed after only the third episode in the US, but don’t let that influence your opinion of this blend of Chris Carter magic with hints of The Twilight Zone, The Matrix and the usual Hollywood ‘Nam movie.

After The X-Files had overgrown its own publicity and Millennium had started off on a rocky path but found a loyal fan base only to be axed after the third season, Harsh Realm was planned as the next big Carter project.  But with poor publicity from Fox there was not a hope in hell for this futuristic action-packed hidden gem.

Carter’s vision of a mythic tale was adapted from a comic book premise here an alternate world exists.  This time, whether the audience can relate to it or not, no typical scenario exists for the show.  There are no rules.  Absolutely anything and everything can and does happen.

Scott Bairstow plays the main character, Lt. Hobbes who is ready to settle into normal citizen life with his fiancée and cute dog, but finds himself beckoned by the military for one last assignment.  This involves ‘playing’ Harsh Realm, a virtual reality warfare game.  Hobbes’ mission is to bring down a ruthless vogue General named Santiago (Terry O’Quinn).  On his way, he encounters many virtual characters, which test his physical and psychological ability, but the best part by far is the alliance with the reluctant and dark Mark Pinnochio.

This DVD comes with a rather implausible idea which is hard to grasp at first, but slick camera action, gripping storylines which are fresh and not long overrated make it an enjoyable series to add to the collection.  The performances are the saviour if nothing else is.  However, I am not sure who will actually be willing to purchase this, since it is unheard of.  If you would like guaranteed excellence and talent in the shape of the great Lance Henriksen at his best and an early outing from Josh Hartnett, then opt for Millennium instead.
