Kiss Presents The Hip-Hop Collection (Universal)
By Nigel Valentine
Monday, 10 May 2004
Description:
37 tracks of hip-hop, as selected/presented by Kiss FM, one time credible dance music station.
Which means?
This is what you'd expect, a load of mostly average contemporary artists next to a few classics from the late 80s and early 90s.
Is it much cop?
Not to my ears. Maybe if you're a tracksuit and air-max wearing prick driving a 'modified' Vauxhall Nova with your Kappa slapper girlfriend in the passenger side, then it might appeal. As you clearly have no fucking taste to start with.
How many good tracks?
Less than 10. The few and far between highlights would include Outkast, The Beastie Boys, N*E*R*D, Public Enemy, NWA, Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel, Young MC and Dr Dre. That's not to say there aren't some other good artists on here, there are. It's just they haven't picked their better stuff, Cypress Hill and The Notorious BIG being the prime candidates there.
And the bad?
How long have you got? Shall I list them alphabetically? Overall it seems there's a subtle emphasis on one-hit wonders and gimmick releases, Fatman Scoop, Frankee's 'F U Right Back', Busta Rhymes Knight Rider sampling 'Turn It Up/Fire It Up' and Tone Loc's 'Wild Thing' are all present when they should really be on Now That's What I Call Music or something. Mostly there is a rule of thumb with hip-hop, old = better, newer = worse.  Maybe, like wine, it'll improve with age but the current crop of hip-hop stars featured here - Jay-Z, DMX, Nelly and 50 Cent are presently somewhere between vinegar and Lambrini in the wine quality stakes. Although sometimes things don't improve with age as demonstrated here by Arrested Development? They were shit in 1992 and still stink 12 years later.
Biggest disappointment:
That the only Run DMC track on here is that abortion of a remix by that never heard of since DJ - Jason Nevins. Is this what the late Jam Master Jay should be remembered for? How about 'It's Tricky', 'My Adidas', 'Peter Piper' or 'The Ave'?
The verdict:
In fairness - this whole collection is a disappointment.
Obie Trice and Ludacris would make good circus clowns but are a disgrace to hip-hop.  2Pac is, was and will forever be an overrated MC who should have stuck to dancing for Digital Underground. His early demise did more for his stature than his music would ever have managed.  Based on listening to this you could be forgiven for thinking contemporary hip-hop is in a bit of a state, and it is. But ending on a positive note, there is no sign of Will Smith.
