It’s a little-known fact but N*E*R*D’s classic In Search Of... only caught the attention of the UK public following its re-release. The original version contained a number of skits which on first listen raised a titter at most, but on subsequent hearings grated with the full force of a fingernail down a blackboard. It's a lesson GLC would do well to heed. Namely, cut out the chit-chat and get to the choons.
Their critics, who have grown in number to form the inevitable backlash so beloved of Britain, might be surprised to learn there are actually any tunes. There are, at least, six which from a total numbering a baker's dozen isn’t that bad value. They include top-three hit, ‘Guns Don’t Kill People, Rappers Do’, the, erm, top 32 single ‘Half Man, Half Machine’ and ‘Your Mother's Got A Penis’ which contains a chorus you won't be able to stop singing along to. Unashamedly so.
There seems to be an awful lot of snobbery about Goldie Lookin’ Chain. And most of it emanates from the music press. They´re from Wales and they´re into hip-hop? Bizarre. And they rap too? How dare they!
Personally, I find GLC a breath of fresh air in a music industry that’s becoming increasingly stuffy. If they can reawaken interest in homegrown hip-hop like The Darkness has with soft rock, it will be a case of good work, fellas. If not, at least they tried. That shouldn’t make them trying.
The title may well be tongue in (arse) cheek, but Greatest Hits? Pulease. Greatest Tits, more like. And I mean that most sincerely, and affectionately.
