With the success of computer animated feature films like Finding Nemo and Toy Story 1 and 2, it was only a matter of time before every name in Hollywood would be scrambling to mimic the Pixar posse. Dreamworks has come up with Shark Tale, a mafia-themed movie, set in the world of saltwater fish, is the story of what happens when the son of the shark boss (Robert De Niro) of a fish crime family is killed by a dropped anchor, and a bottom-feeder named Oscar (Will Smith) is found at the scene of the crime. Hoping to win favour with the enemies of the ganglord, the fast-talking hustler poses as the killer known as the ’sharkslayer’, but it all goes pear-shaped.
With so many big names on board (Angelina Jolie, Jack Black, Ziggy Marley), it’s tricky to say who the star really is but nothing gets in the way of giggling at the skill in which the animators have captured the characteristics of each actor in their digital persona – Will Smith’s big ears and Renee’s chubby cheeks are used to their full effect.
Best moments to look out for are the cute shrimp who should get an Oscar nomination for highly emotive acting, the dreadlocked jellyfish Bernie and Ernie (the funniest double act in a long time )and the scene with Martin Scorcese and De Niro in a “what what?... you said what first…what?” routine. May not be as good as Toy Story but still a good wheeze for a cold, wet afternoon. (4/5)
