Graham Coxon: Happiness In Magazines (Transcopic)
By Steve Rudd
Monday, 17 May 2004

This is Coxon's fifth solo album already, and arguably his finest set of songs yet. A perfect 45 minutes in length, this 12 song collection is spurred on by the chirpy and upbeat indie rock jolt of 'Spectacular' that heads on into 'No Good Time' in style, which is an even cooler tune, with Graham sounding as though he is Tom Petty fronting The Libertines.

To be truthful, for the most part Graham's distinctive singing style does actually remind of his old band-mate Damon Albarn's way with spouting words. Incidentally, Graham professes to loving working on his own far more than being in Blur, which was naturally demanded. First and foremost, as a solo artist he has total creative control, and for this album he drafted in Stephen Street to produce for him.

The first single from the LP was the most riotously rocking of these 12 ('Freakin' Out', which kind of hits out with the same uber-cool vibes as Blur's deliriously spirited 'Song 2'), while the rest of the album is an engaging mixture of both zest-fuelled and downbeat tunes, with 'All Over Me' particularly outstanding for its beautiful vibes as a lush String arrangement delicately clashes with a lovely acoustic guitar melody.

'People Of The Earth,' in contrast, is thematically far darker and more paranoid in nature, before 'Are You Ready' exudes all the style of The Doors in one of their famed musical mood-swings. The most subdued and reflective song of all comes last but not least of all in the form of 'Ribbons & Leaves' in which a subtly affecting piano tune tinkles beside some equally as fragile guitar-strumming. On the whole this album is nothing but positively inspirational.

All that Graham needs to do now is hook up with Badly Drawn Boy perhaps, so they could release enchanting music as a duo, akin to Hall & Oates.
