Just over a year ago, Christina Aguilera performed three sold-out concerts at London’s Wembley Arena. Not a huge deal, no but quite surprising that it was her first ever tour over this side of the pond. To emphasise the significance of finally bringing her show over to the UK (and Europe), a live DVD of her performance in ol’ Blighty has been issued. Packed with 19 live tracks including a string of hits from Stripped, the DVD takes you on the road with Ms Aguilera. Included also is an array of featurettes like ‘candid’ interviews about herself, the tour and the album as well as vox-pops from her massive entourage. Fascinating. And dreadfully scripted.
The most bizarre special feature is ‘One Night In Milano’, where Christina meets up with Donatella Versace for a night of clubbing in Milan, but it could have easily been Great Yarmouth. Barely a minute in duration, half of it has crinkly Donatella murmuring something incomprehensible (subtitles really should have been provided at this point), while Christina is seen boogying with her male dancers to her own song. At one point, the two are standing next to each other so you can really judge who has caked on the most amount of tan boot polish.
The main piece, however, is the live concert and typically, it’s bold, brash and boring – unless you were privileged to have been there. Particularly with American artists (Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child), there is a tendency to be elaborate – horrific costumes, wild hair, silly dance routines and a load of clichéd stage talk about how great it is to be performing in front of “all my fans”. Christina fulfils all these requirements to the max, plus she really belts her lungs out – a little too much in some cases where she sounds really wobbly.
What she’s achieved musically is remarkable – going from a squeaky clean poppet to a screeching siren flaunting her sexuality with barely a scratch to show for it. Tough as old boots she may be, but on the evidence of this DVD alone, nothing special.
