The Incredibles (PG)

The trailers for The Incredibles looked really impressive, something that would make up for the less than perfect previous Pixar production, Finding Nemo. Sadly, it doesn’t live up to expectations.

The premise is good: two superheroes who get married are forced into a relocation programme and have to give up the saving the world business after their city becomes rife with lawsuits. Bob (Craig T Nelson), though, carries on doing it on the sly, keeping his antics from his wife, Helen (Holly Hunter) and his children in an effort to try and brighten up his otherwise routine life. Unfortunately, whilst believing his moonlighting is harmless, he ends up getting himself in all kinds of hot water.

Where Brad Bird’s film fails is that it can’t sustain its plot for very long.  Yes, it has its moments, but they are few and far between. Toy Story this isn’t. Nelson and Hunter are great, but it would have worked better as a shorter feature and stretching it to two hours may push audiences patience to the limit. Perhaps Pixar are trying too hard to please or maybe, like Disney, they are finding it difficult to keep ahead of movies from rival Dreamworks. Either way, they need to make more of an effort with their next production.
