Steven Soderburgh has directed some very fine films in the past, from Out Of Sight to Traffic. Ocean’s Eleven was really good, too, a lovely little crime caper – George Clooney and chums stealing a fortune from nasty casino owner Andy Garcia. It didn’t need a sequel.
Sequels are often rotten, the devices of greedy producers and studio executives who think audiences are foolish enough to think lightning can strike twice. Well, it doesn’t happen here.
Clooney and pals are found by Garcia and are told that if they don’t return the money they stole he’ll kill them. Sounds all right so far, but that’s as far as the fun goes. After that it’s a series of comic escapades with some heists thrown in for good measure, the exact opposite of the magic the first film possessed. Soderburgh also uses plot devices that smack of desperation, as if he and writer, George Nolfi couldn’t come up with anything better.
This reviewer tried at first to like the movie, but by the last reel was cringing at the terrible way it had turned out, feeling cheated. Don’t be tricked by all the marketing gimmicks and the flashy trailers. There are much better pictures out there at the moment to choose from than this.
