It’s questionable which music category Rooster fit into. Pop? Rock? Maybe even both. By playing at Camden’s Electric Ballroom, it could be that they are trying to distance themselves from the ‘pop’ tag but there’s one problem – the audience is filled with teenage girls. What Busted left behind, Rooster have picked up. While there is nothing wrong with that, it’s not exactly boosting their reputation as wannabe rockers.
Come show time, their performance is worthy of some praise. The lads genuinely appear to love and be good at what they are doing, though it’s hard not to avoid the way in which Rooster have been picked – a good looking frontman and bass player with the other two members easily fading into the background. Harsh as it may sound, the boys are fully aware of their set up, and this can be the only reason that lead singer Nick thinks it’s a good idea to tear off his t-shirt and immediately sending us back to the pre-jungle days of Peter Andre.
Most appreciate the stunt, with one very enthused fan frantically waving a sign, with the ever so subtle phrase, ‘Show us your cock-a-doodle-doos’. The boys play most tracks off their debut album with the best by far in the form of their debut single, ‘Come Get Some’. The likes of ‘You’re So Right For Me’, ‘Joyride’ and ‘Angels Calling’ aren’t far behind, energetic and filled with passion.
They may not be content with putting all their eggs in one basket and perhaps that isn’t the appropriate way to paraphrase a band called Rooster, but they do possess the sort of qualities that could give them good enough reasons to reach for the top and to make their record company gleefully happy.
