Soulfly: The Song Remains Insane
By Ben Saunders
Monday, 28 March 2005
Max Cavalera is undoubtedly an institution of the metal world. After establishing himself, and making one of the definitive metal albums of the 1990s, with Sepultura, he quit the band at the height of their success and started a new band-cum-revolving-door-solo-project Soulfly. The band’s self-titled debut went top 30 in the UK, and the fact last year’s Prophecy was their fourth album is testament to Max’s hard work. It’s fitting, therefore, that this first DVD serves as a retrospective of Soulfly’s whole career –from their inception to most recent tour footage.

Promo videos from all four of the band’s albums are present and correct. The main focus however is over an hour of live footage, drawn from various shows around the world – ranging from the recent (‘Prophecy’, ‘Execution Style’) to old classics (‘Eye For An Eye’ and even welcome Sepultura numbers ‘Refuse/Resist’ and ‘Roots Bloody Roots’). There are three further performances, for some reason designated as ‘bonus clips’, and also audio-only tracks including a dub version of ‘Fire’ and new song ‘Blow Away’.

Aside from the musical content, the DVD also boasts exclusive interviews with Max, that again reflect on Soulfly’s whole history, from setting up the new band and his feelings at the murder of his adopted son Dana, to taking his young son to Faith No More and travelling to Serbia to record part of Prophecy with native musicians and Eyesburn. All in all, as complete a chronicle of the band’s history as anyone could ask for, whether completists or serving as an introduction for those new to the band.
