Constantine (15)

Hollywood seems to be taking a great interest in comic books these days since the success of the X-Men and Spiderman films.  Some have been far from impressive (Daredevil for instance) and Constantine seems to fall somewhere in-between.

John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) is a chain-smoking exorcist who has the ability to spot “half breed” demons and angels amongst regular people and spends most of his time sending rather nasty creatures back from whence they came. When police detective, Angela’s (Rachel Weiss) twin sister commits suicide, the duo are thrown together, trying to decipher why demons have suddenly decided to wage personal vendettas against him.

Director, Francis Lawrence’s movie has some nice touches, but ultimately it is a rather confusing picture as there is a lot of information for the audience to take in. Reeves, whilst turning in a decent performance, is still very much in the Matrix mode, walking with the air of a man who wants to blow anything he sees to pieces and, at times, frequently does. As a horror film it fares reasonably well, but not enough to make it memorable.
