No Comply: Unleash The Fury
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 28 March 2005
A younger-looking Terry Duckworth who appears to have enjoyed one too many of Betty’s hotpots on drums? A vocalist, no disrespect to the lovely Kelly intended, who could conceivably be the daughter of Alison Moyet? Hmm, Simons Cowell and Fuller don’t seem to have got their no-doubt manicured hands dirty with No Comply, a sextet hailing from Plymouth.

In truth, there is nothing manufactured about a band who combine the ska-loving antics of Bad Manners with the punk sensibilities of Snuff. The brass section wield their instruments like guitars when they’re not playing. And chip in with the odd yelped vocal as well.

The group as a whole play at such a pace, you half-expect Tas to join them in their whirlwind activity on stage. It’s probably not a good idea to watch with those of an hyperactive disposition. Unless you want to see them bouncing off your walls.

No Comply's first headlining gig, at London’s Garage (a venue presumably named because it’s no bigger than your average suburban parking space), forms the centrepiece of Unleash The Fury. After six frenetic tracks, you’ll have to open the window to let out all the heat that’s accumulated in your living room. Before taking a shower.

Viewers can also enjoy behind-the-scenes footage of the band. It’s like sitting in at a student union bar. Hear anecdotes about band members comparing sizes of their, erm, members, apparently drummer Si cheats because he warms his up, and watch the hard-drinking contingent of No Comply getting slowly, but surely, wasted during a post-gig session.

No Comply, keen skateboarders, take their name from one of the pastime’s most popular tricks. Yet such a moniker also offers a defiant two-fingered gesture. To the likes of Cowell and Fuller.
