Monday, 21 March 2005 Will Young, the housewives’ darling and pop idol of budding fag hags the length and breadth of Britain is, releases his live concert DVD in the wake of his success at this year’s Brit awards. As he boasts a more sophisticated sound than his pop contemporaries, Will’s Winter Arena Tour 2004, filmed at London’s Wembley Arena, has a more mature feel than your average pop concert and doesn’t feature a single pyrotechnic or shower of confetti. Instead it featured stunning sets designed by Australian producer Michael Gracey (the visual effects designer on Moulin Rouge), classy costumes and a style of choreography that wouldn't be out of place on a west end stage. ’Friday’s Child’, the opening number of the concert features some distinctly Fosse-esqe moves complete with bowler hats and tailcoats. This seems to set the more mature tone to the evening which is maintained during the rest of the nights cavalcade of hits from the multi platinum albums From Now On and Friday’s Child. As far as concert performances go, Will gives one which is as flawless as it's ever going to get. The concert footage itself is interactive allowing you to peek behind stage during Will’s costume changes as well as several other hidden features, and for the die-hard fans the disc also features an interview, three music videos (including my favourite ‘Friday’s Child’) , the making of all three videos and a behind-the-scenes of the show featurette. This release is an excellent example of what a live concert DVD should be; it can't be faulted in any way, shape or form – unless you don't like Will Young of course.
