The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (PG)
By Lisa Simpson
Monday, 05 September 2005
Having never seen the TV series, read the books or heard the radio show I was a Hiker virgin and found this to be a hugely weird and wacky film where things made no sense at times, but hey, why does it need to?

The basis of the story is that a guy called Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) is having the worst day of his life, house is being demolished, girl he liked went off with another man and he has just discovered his best friend Ford, is an alien (Mos Def). Oh and Earth is about to be demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass by a race of aliens called Vogons.

He is saved by his friend who hitches then a ride on a passing spacecraft owned by eccentric and crazed Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell).  What ensues is a wild adventure of the search for the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe and Everything.  With a chronically depressed robot (Alan Rickman), singing dolphins, an infinite probability drive, towels and alien poetry readings all playing significant parts in the story it’s a wonder that I didn’t emerge a bumbling idiot with a melted brain.

This is a film that is for those who can switch their brain off and not get irritated by not knowing the answer to every plotline and prop used in a film. I still don’t know what the hell the importance of towels are or why on earth the answer to the ultimate question is 42, but to be honest I know that I don’t need to know the answers  to enjoy this film. It’s a very, very funny, but thought-provoking with great voice cameos from Bill Bailey and The League of Gentlemen.
