Five bikini-clad hotties dancing themselves fit on Miami’s South Beach? When I saw the press release, I was literally gagging to review this DVD.
And Fiona, Vicky, Danielle, Janine and Ashley don’t disappoint, as they shake their little tushes to the sounds of Max Graham vs Yes’s ‘Owner Of A Lonely Heart’, Studio B's ‘I See Girls (Crazy)’, and a host of other Ministry-of-Sound floor fillers.
There is, however, a pimple, so to speak, on an otherwise perfect complexion. His name is Steven. You can see why his lean torso has been included when you discover what Pump It Up! means to Libby Grant, Ministry of Sound brand development manager: "There is a huge audience for this type of fitness video – young women who enjoy dance music and working out in a fun atmosphere."
Libby seems to overlook the fact that there’s a potentially huger audience for this type of fitness video. A male one post-pub on a Friday night, intent on a horizontal workout sprawled on the sofa. Sure, they’ll be some loosening of clothing, specifically in the trouser region.
For us blokes these DVDS offer a haven. Channel 5 no longer shows soft porn of a Friday night. But, Libby please, Steven’s one-man army is invading our field of vision and would you look at that, he’s just taken off his top. Talk about a passion killer.
Pump It Up! is divided into four main sections. First, dance leader Fiona introduces herself. The 26-year-old Dubliner lets it be known that she’s been dancing since the age of 10. Fi also reveals herself to be a comedic genius. "I’ve worked with some of the best," she casually deadpans before delivering the killer punch line: "Blue, Robbie, Kylie, Whitney Houston, the lot."
Next up comes a five-minute warm-up. To the strains of ‘Jacques Your Body’ by Les Rhythmes Digitales. A 30-minute general carb-burning workout follows.
The DVD continues with a 15-minute focus on bums and tums, with the emphasis on deflating the two balloons that have been swelling since you gorged yourself over the Christmas period. It concludes with a five-minute cool-down session. All in all, that’s near enough a 60-minute fitness class. Conducted in the comfort of your own living room.
Ultimately, though, Pump It Up! exposes the crude division between the sexes. After the DVD has finished, you can be certain of two things. 1.) The ladies will be perspiring. 2.) The lads will also have lost plenty of fluid. But it won’t be sweat.
