Whilst the title of this DVD refers to the feeling experienced by the crowd rather than the group whenever Motörhead play live, Lemmy gave his entourage a hell of a scare following a recent gig in France. He collapsed with exhaustion after performing in temperatures peaking at 130 degrees. This after drummer Mikkey Dee tried to talk his bandmate into doing just the one encore rather than two.
Lemmy, being the consummate pro that he is, refused. His manager has since insisted Lem follow a healthier lifestyle so as not to throw the trio’s European tour into further jeopardy. Motörhead's founder has, as a result, agreed to start to add ice to his customary glass or twelve of Jack Daniel’s. Boom, boom, and, indeed, boom.
Stage Fright faithfully replicates last year’s concert in Düsseldorf, a performance which formed part of the band’s 30th anniversary tour. Lemmy, Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell tear through old favourites like 'Ace Of Spades' and 'Overkill' alongside newer material from latest album Inferno including the stone-cold classic 'Killers' and 'Whore House Blues' which they perform acoustically with Mikkey Dee stepping up from the drum kit to centre stage, to play guitar. Dee handles the transition with aplomb, but then again he did start out as a guitarist.
The bonus features are largely superfluous, especially the audio commentary. This consists of Lemmy, Phil and Mikkey sitting in a studio watching the edited version of the Düsseldorf show. Lemmy smokes, Phil smokes and Mikkey bitches about wanting to drop songs from the set list he’s grown bored of playing.
Watch the level of effort that goes into a Motörhead performance. Marvel at the fact that Lemmy, coming up to 60, doesn’t collapse more often. And hope above hope that his recent appearance in a Walkers Crisps commercial hasn’t given him a taste for the salty snack. Further dehydration is the last thing Lemmy needs. (4/5)
