Strewth! What a week! Mojo got an iRiver (and is very chuffed with it) and I went for a picnic in the park – London’s Regent’s Park to be precise in the superbly sunny weather we had. T’was lots of fun apart from nearly being attacked by hunger-stricken evil geese (who quite liked Doritos, by the way). Then my friend suggested rowing one of those boats in the park’s lake, assuring me she was a pro and since I had never rowed a boat in my life, I was happy for her to take the lead.
For the first 15 minutes I was experiencing bouts of dizzy spells as we kept going round and round in circles, while my friend tried to get to grips with the oars, admitting she wasn’t quite the rower she claimed to be and then blaming one of her arms for being a bit dodgy (???). All the while other people rowed past without a problem while I looked on enviously. Matters weren’t helped when three Italian blokes went past, snapping away at us with their cameras! I mean, how rude! Being papped and them shouting something incoherent.
Time was running out fast for our full hour and we were far away from the bank side. I started to believe I’d be stuck out in this tiny boat all evening but with perseverance we made it back. The bloke in charge of the boats told us we wouldn’t get our deposit back because we took so long to return (of course I knew he was winding us up) but my friend fell for it hook, line and sinker. She kept asking why while he tapped away at the till before replying in a broken Arabic accent: “Computer says no”. Well I thought it was very funny! Brave attempt at humour too!
Any way, as a result of that ordeal, I spent three-quarters of the weekend in bed, only to wake up at regular intervals and bark for the latest Ashes score before diving back under the duvet. Come Sunday night, I was wide-awake all night. Oops. Well, as I write this, the final Ashes test isn’t over but it looks very likely the match between England and Australia will be drawn and England will win the Ashes. Yay! Mind you, my dad (who seems to possess some psychic powers) predicted a draw for this final match with rain being the major factor so no doubt I won’t hear the end of it. You know, stuff like “I told you!” and “Didn’t I say this would happen?”
Well isn’t this an upbeat editorial? Makes a change! Usually I get a slapped wrist for upsetting people. Now I’ll get a barrage of complaints for not moaning about something. Oh hang on, there is something. Have been invited to yet another wedding reception. Friends look at me in sheer horror/amazement and say, “you always go to so many weddings!” Er, this is the fourth one this year. Does that count as “many”? Anyone want to take my place? I don’t even know whose wedding it is this time!
OK, I’m out of here. Going off to watch the remainder of the test match. Have a great week.
